Shunt Reactor Overview
Shunt reactors are the most compact and cost-effective way to compensate for a capacitive generation for long transmission lines and extendable systems. Shunt reactors operate similarly to power transformers, except they possess only one phase winding per phase rather than three. By absorbing and compensating the reactive power in cables and high voltage transmission lines, shunt reactor increase the efficiency of power and energy systems. A direct connection to the power line or a series connection between three winding transformers is allowed. High-quality precision spacers ground to 0.01mm parallelism is necessary to produce low noise & vibrations.
Ceramic spacers for shunt reactors
To determine the radial distance between core elements, ceramic spacers for shunt reactors are used. Ceramic spacers are glued tightly to the core elements by applying pressure to special adhesives on both sides. Ceramic spacers are incorporated into the radially laminated iron packages, while radially laminated iron packages ensure precise air-gap compliance.
Core steel blocks are mounted on rigid ceramic spacers to construct the gapped core limb. To form a solid core limb column, the modules are precisely stacked and cemented together. There are tens of tons of pulsating forces generated across all air gaps by the magnetic field in the core limb, so the reactor core must be very stiff to avoid vibrations and excessive noise. To meet these requirements, the design concept also needs to be mechanically robust to endure these conditions over a reactor's lifetime.
The versatility of ceramic spacers in both form as well as chemical composition makes them useful for various applications. For example, typical ceramic tile spacers are solid squares with a diameter of 12 inches useful for tile installation. In addition, they are used to space tile pieces evenly before grouting.
Characteristics of steatite ceramic spacers

Having a low thermal expansion coefficient.
Excellent mechanical stability.
Close tolerances & complex shapes manufactured economically
Applications
Ceramic spacers, which mimic the natural mineral content of bone, are used in medical practice as dental implants and spinal discs replacement.
There are also circular ceramic spacers used in electrical insulation, for example, in power lines between poles. In addition, shunt reactors use ceramic spacers because they have good properties and are widely used.
In addition to medical products, ceramic spacers are also used in the automotive and aerospace industries, defense, construction, microelectronics, and oil and petroleum. Ceramic spacers are highly durable, chemically resistant, and weather-resistant, as well as cost-effective.
Although all ceramics have a crystalline structure, ceramic spacers fall into the technical ceramics category, also called engineering or advanced ceramics. Ceramic spacers are commonly made from aluminum oxide, aluminum nitride, and beryllium oxide.
The shapes of ceramic spacers range from circular to square to pyramid to t-shaped.
